Product Information:

Robitussin (codeine + guaifenesin) is a prescription cough syrup that combines:

  • Codeine — an opioid antitussive (cough suppressant) that acts on the brain’s cough center to reduce coughing.

  • Guaifenesin — an expectorant that thins and loosens mucus in the lungs, making coughs more productive.

Together, they are used for temporary relief of coughs due to colds, bronchitis, or other respiratory irritations

How to Take It:

  • Use exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • Measure liquid doses carefully with the provided dosing cup or syringe—do not use household teaspoons.

  • You can take it with or without food. If it irritates your stomach, take with food.

  • Stay well-hydrated to help thin mucus in the lungs.

Dosage:

Dosage varies by strength of the product and your doctor’s order. A typical example (may differ by local product strength):

Adults (≥12 years)

  • Typical: 10 mL (2 teaspoons) every 4 hours as needed for cough.

  • Maximum: Do not exceed 40 mL in 24 hours (6 doses) unless directed by a doctor.

Children

  • 6–12 years: often 5 mL (1 teaspoon) every 4 hours as directed.

  • Under 6 years: only with a doctor’s guidance and generally not recommended.

Warnings:

  • You are allergic to codeine or guaifenesin.

  • You have severe asthma, COPD, or breathing problems.

  • There’s risk of addiction or substance misuse.

  • For children (especially under 12), unless specifically directed by a clinician.

Side Effects:

These generally come from guaifenesin and include:

  • Nausea

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Headache

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea
