Duramorph

Duramorph is a high-potency, preservative-free morphine sulfate injection indicated for the treatment of severe pain where other analgesics are inadequate. It belongs to the opioid analgesic class (Schedule II controlled substance) and is used in clinical settings such as perioperative pain control, epidural or intrathecal analgesia, and acute severe pain management under direct medical supervision.

Active Ingredient:

• Morphine Sulfate — a central nervous system opioid agonist that alters the perception and emotional response to pain.

Dosage Forms & Strengths:

• Available as preservative-free injectable solution in concentrations such as 0.5 mg/mL, 1 mg/mL, and higher, typically presented in 10 mL ampules for intravenous (IV), epidural, or intrathecal use.

Mechanism of Action:
Morphine acts primarily as a mu-opioid receptor agonist in the central nervous system, reducing the transmission of nociceptive signals and altering the emotional experience of pain. Its effect helps manage moderate to severe pain when lower-strength analgesics are insufficient.

Administration:

• Dosing is individualized based on patient factors, severity of pain, and response to therapy; close monitoring is required due to risk of respiratory depression.

Safety & Precautions:

• Risk of Respiratory Depression: Morphine can cause serious, life-threatening respiratory depression, especially with neuraxial (epidural/intrathecal) use; patients should be monitored in a setting equipped for respiratory support.

• Dependence & Abuse Potential: As a Schedule II opioid, Duramorph carries a high risk of abuse, dependence, and addiction; use strictly as prescribed.

• Side Effects: May include nausea, vomiting, sedation, constipation, pruritus, hypotension, sedation, and severe respiratory depression at high doses or in sensitive patients.

• Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to morphine or other opioids; caution in patients with respiratory disorders, head injuries, CNS depression, or severe hepatic or renal impairment.
